Instructor Candidate Expectations

Modified on Tue, Nov 14, 2023 at 4:37 PM

Any participant enrolling in an Instructor Course assumes the responsibility of passing the Pre-Course Assessment and presenting valid requirements for the course. This includes having the correct Basic/Provider level certifications. ProACT Academy conducts all Instructor courses as outlined by the American Red Cross, and there is no exception to conducting these assessments. Instructor courses are not designed to teach you Base/Provider level skills, and the Instructor Trainer(s) teaching the course cannot re-assess after the maximum amount of assessment is conducted. All skills must be demonstrated to standard as outlined in the Instructor's Manual, Skill Practice Sheets, and the videos.

Important note: The r.21 First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor course is very different from the r.16 version, mainly in the fact that it's 1) much shorter 2) heavily relies on instructor candidates (ICs) preparation ahead of time. Instructor candidates are responsible for adequate preparation before the in-person session to ensure their successful completion. Instructor candidates are to use their Instructor's Manual (IM) to prepare in advance to teach any aspect of the course. The responsibility is on each instructor candidate to be ready and prepared, to come in with questions, and to quickly incorporate the feedback given by the IT.

Please see the syllabi below for more about what is expected from you as an Instructor Candidate and course.

SFA 801: First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor

Instructor candidates are assessed based on their overall skill performance and competency, professionalism and readiness to enter the lifecycle of an American Red Cross Instructor. The in-person session serves as a checkpoint for ensuring candidates are adequately prepared, knowledgeable, and competent moving forward. All instructor candidate participation and performance are assessed when determining a final evaluation of Successful, Unsuccessful, or Not Evaluated. It is the sole responsibility of the instructor candidate to understand what is required for successful completion and to prepare to ensure their success.
