Under emergency or exceptional circumstances, students may petition for an incomplete grade. Incomplete is a temporary grade used when work is not completed by the end of the class. An Incomplete may be reported for a student who has carried a subject with a passing grade and has put forth substantial effort until near the end of the class and then, because of illness or other unusual and substantiated cause beyond their control, has been unable to take or complete the final examination, or to complete some limited amount of course work.
An Incomplete is not given to a student who stays away from a final examination unless the student proves to the instructor that they were prevented from attending as indicated above. In the absence of such proof, the grade shall be U; even with such evidence, if their work has convinced the instructor that they cannot pass, the grade shall be U.
If an instructor agrees that a student meets the criteria for an incomplete, the instructor must:
- contact the student in writing to let them know that they will receive an incomplete
- let the student know what they need to do to finish the incomplete work (e.g., the amount of time the student has to complete the work, the exact work the student needs to do to get the incomplete grade replaced with a permanent grade, etc.)
- students should be encouraged to complete the work as soon as possible
If a student is given an incomplete, the student should:
- make sure they contact the instructor to understand the requirements for completing the work
- make sure they know the deadline for handing in the completed work, as discussed with the instructor
- keep in contact with the instructor who granted the incomplete to make sure they are on track for finishing the work
All incomplete course assignments must be completed within ten days of the last day of the class. There are no exceptions to the ten-day policy as the American Red Cross establishes this requirement.
